A White Paper on The Value of Seeking Solitude

By Sarah Jones St John

Winter 2024

Through Grey Wolfe and the House of Grey Wolfe we aim to provide members and customers with the tools to that help them find solitude, and view it as an act of self-love. This paper explores the difference between solitude and loneliness, highlighting the specific benefits that solitude offers. It aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how intentional solitude can be a valuable component of a balanced and fulfilling life.

“Solitude can be a powerful tool for soothing the nervous system and reducing stress. Whether it’s a few quiet moments of breathing and reflection, or a longer focus on daily practices like meditation, solitude gifts us with the opportunity to release our stored tension and repair our inner worlds. In that way, solitude is a love language that allows you to understand, speak to, and heal your own nervous energies.

Solitude can also free us to be 'who we are', as we take a pause from the eyes of a society that doesn’t always make space for our individual life journeys and joys. When I travel, I often visit remote places, opening time for the activities I love, as well as to reflect on how I spend my time on our planet. In solitude, I ask for guidance in my life, and begin to practise wellness habits that I can later carry through to busier days.”

The reason many of the world’s greatest artists work in solitude is because it allows room for creativity. When we lean into silence, we amplify the messages and inspirations from the world around us. Everything becomes clearer, as the natural, energy-led ideas around us become more prominent.

Of course, it is important to balance mindful, intentional solitude with spending time surrounded by your loved ones. Every person is different, and we each have our own ways of connecting with our mind; it’s all about finding the balance that works for you.

In this increasingly noisy and hyperconnected world, the concept of seeking solitude and loneliness can sometimes be misunderstood. However, the two represent distinct experiences with vastly different implications for our mental and emotional health. While loneliness is often associated with negative feelings of isolation and disconnection, solitude is a state of being alone without feeling lonely. It can be a powerful and positive experience that fosters self-discovery, healing, creativity, and inner peace, which in return, helps us build meaningful relationships with our loved ones, and everyone around us.

Understanding the difference between intentional solitude and loneliness

Loneliness is the distressing experience of feeling isolated or disconnected from others. It is often accompanied by feelings of sadness, anxiety, and low self-esteem. The oxymoron of social media ‘friends and followers’, can take loneliness to a new level as one sees only ‘curated’ lives of others and compares those to their own reality.

Solitude, on the other hand, is the deliberate choice to spend time alone. It is a state of voluntary aloneness that can provide a respite from social interactions and external demands in order to bring balance to one’s wellbeing.

The traits of a solitude seekers can serve as a blueprint for understanding the true essence of meaningful alone time and reaping its benefits. While social connections are essential to our well-being, a connection with ourselves is also paramount. So, on the rock, in quiet grace,
She finds herself in her own space.
For in the stillness, she can see,
The woman she is and yet will be.
