At Grey Wolfe, we believe that intentional breathing is a crucial element of self-healing. By calming your nervous system down, you can immerse in the soothing power of each inhale and exhale, enhancing the effects of your treatment, and how your body and mind will continue to feel afterwards.
The most profound healing occurs when our members focus on conscious breathing during their session, regardless of which treatment they’re enjoying. Breathwork helps to cultivate deep breathing, softening the body to trigger its parasympathetic nervous system. This system is a network of nerves that relax your body after periods of stress and danger, allowing you to run life-sustaining processes such as digestion or sleep. This transcending relaxation also enhances the benefits of your treatment, allowing you to release stress and internal blocks.
Alongside our expert practitioners we have prepared a step-by-step guide that’ll help you introduce Breathwork into your daily life, hoping to inspire you to approach the simple act of breathing with intention, and awareness that is key to self-healing.
How to start with Breathwork
- First, lie down on your back with your arms at your sides and palms facing up.
You can use a small rolled towel under the curve of your neck, as well as a pillow under your knees to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible.
- Close your eyes, and begin by not changing anything about your breathing. The first step to changing anything is to notice it as it currently is.
- When you inhale, where does the breath stop before turning around to be exhaled? In the chest, rib cage, abdomen? When you exhale, does the air slowly exit your body the same way it entered?
- Take this time to notice any discomfort. Are you feeling any slight shaking, clenching in the jaw or elevated heart rate? Allow yourself to be in tune with your nervous system responses as they are in the present moment.
- Now, place both of your hands over your upper chest and clavicles. Feel the rise and fall of this area as you inhale and exhale. Do this for 3 to 5 rounds of breath.
- Next, return your palms to each side of your rib cage. As you inhale, allow the air to expand into your entire rib cage. Exhale, and use your rib cage, along with
your abdominals, to gently press the air back out of your nose. Repeat for 3 to 5 breaths.
- Finally, bring your hands back to the upper chest and clavicle area. As you continue directing your breath down into the fullness of your rib cage, notice if anything has changed in the upper chest and neck area. Do you feel less tension and movement? Are your muscles more relaxed? Observe for the final 3 to 5 rounds.
- To bring the practice to completion, simply return your arms to your sides, palms face up. Take the time to notice how you are feeling now that you’ve taken the time to shift your focus from stress and worries and into intentional breathing. You’re likely to feel relaxed and calm, even sleepy. Or, perhaps the relaxation has reignited your energy levels, leaving you feeling rejuvenated and ready to take on the day.
The 5-5 Exercise
While our natural tendency is to breathe at a rate of two or three seconds per minute, Coherent Breathing, or the 5-5 breath, is a controlled and conscious breathing practice that slows down our breathing to 4 then 5 seconds, helping to facilitate a calmer state of mind and body.
- First, focus on the natural rhythm of your breath. Try to notice the current length of each inhale and exhale.
- Next, for just 1 minute, breathe in for 4 seconds, and exhale for 4 seconds.
- Then, slow down your breathing further. Breath in for 5 seconds, and exhale for 5 seconds.
- Try to gradually extend the count every minute, until you reach 10 seconds.
