In our hyper-connected world, we’re rarely able to appreciate quietness. Always connected, moving from one task and idea to another, our busy lives can hinder our ability to nurture the connection with ourselves. Just ask yourself… when was the last time you really gave yourself a moment to stay still and relish in the sound of your own thoughts?
Grey Wolfe was born out of the need for real stillness. Our space is designed to be purposefully different to traditional wellbeing spaces and spas. We don’t mask pain and discomfort with soft furnishings and short-term fixes to wellbeing – we unearth and expose dis-ease before it manifests into disease.
Stillness at Grey Wolfe
Our founder, Sarah Jones St John, often reflects on the saying ‘The man who sat on a rock and found himself’. The anecdote perfectly encompasses our wellbeing ethos. It highlights how profound tracing back to bare essentials and ridding of unnecessary distractions in a quiet, remote location can be. To have the courage and commitment to one’s health to sit uncomfortably on a cold, stone surface and focus on what’s truly within.
It’s why we offer complete solitude to every member whenever they visit. They get the entire space to themselves, immersed in complete privacy to switch off, disconnect and fully recharge through frequency healing. We believe that only when you’re ready to sit with your thoughts and emotions, can you truly embark onto the journey of genuine self-healing.
Meaningful time alone
But the idea of solitude isn’t to be confused with loneliness. Social connections are the cornerstone of Grey Wolfe for a reason, and we believe that meaningful social interactions are crucial to our health and wellbeing. For us, solitude isn’t synonymous with loneliness. On the contrary, taking the time to ourselves can greatly impact our social connections, alongside many other elements of our life and wellbeing. Once we learn to take care of ourselves, only then can we really take care of others successfully. Meaningful time alone allows us to separate from the stress and anxiety of everyday life. When we forgo these moments and leap into busyness, we’re essentially stacking these stressors up in our bodies and minds. It’s perhaps our greatest error, that we often choose to keep pursuing being busy the more our minds and bodies crave to pause and slow down. Because unfortunately, these stressors we try to ignore don’t go away. And over time, they begin to manifest into diseases and illnesses.
What may at first feel foreign and uncomfortable, is often exactly the cure we need. Quality time alone is as essential to our wellbeing as food and water. It gives us the opportunity to abandon the social construct of who we should be and instead, opens the door for us to understand who we want to be. Processing feelings, emotions, and pain in solitude is the only way towards real, genuine healing.
Here, we highlight some of the most important benefits of embracing stillness, and why it’s a fundamental part of a Grey Wolfe membership.
Improved mental clarity
Separating ourselves from everyday life - the stress, problems and tasks, gives our minds a much-needed break. When we allow ourselves the space to step back, we enter a new perspective. Very often, problems you can’t resolve when stressed become much easier to untangle once you’ve taken the time to yourself.
Better social connections
While alone time can feel quite contradictive when thinking about social connections, it can actually be one of the most effective ways to build real, meaningful relationships. When you take time to evaluate situations, your own emotions or even behaviour, you can better communicate with those around you. A clearer mind helps you build healthy outlets for emotions. Allowing you to express and embrace how you feel, to truly reap the benefits of meaningful relationships.
Enhanced cognitive health and stress resilience
By setting aside time to address stress or anxiety, you allow yourself to gain perspective. Strengthening your cognitive health through building conscious coping mechanisms and healthy habits. As a result, you’re better able to handle future situations, especially those that could have previously sparked feelings of stress and anxiety. While those elements are an inevitable part of life, being able to handle them and separate yourself from their effects is a great way to self-heal and nurture your spirit.
Improved self-awareness
Giving yourself the permission to stay still empowers you in a very wholesome way. By treating time alone as an act of self-love, you’ll reach a level of self-awareness unattainable otherwise. Your thoughts and actions will become deeply rooted in compassion and understanding, leading you to a healthier relationship with yourself, which nourishes a better and more sustainable approach to life.
